Do you take a chance on a new author?

With the onset of all the Free reads at Amazon, finding a new author you like should be easy. Instead I think it may be more difficult. Sure the free reads and the $.99 price points bring those books to the forefront and make it financially inexpensive to peruse them. But the system is flawed. I don't know about you but I'm getting picky about what free reads I download. Is there something wrong with this picture?

I'm to the point where I'm scrutinizing the free and inexpensive reads more than the higher priced books.

What about you? How do you choose what books to read?

  1. I only buy from a new-to-me author if it is in genre I *love*, or the book description sounds startlingly original. Otherwise, meh, I'll let others judge first. Have been burned way too often.

  3. Yes, Nicole Lee I do too. I've been pleasantly surprised with the quality of some of the books. I've also been disappointed by other. :D

  4. I always scan a few pages of the writing to see if I enjoy that author's style. I can usually tell within a couple pages (if not paragraphs) if it's going to be a good fit for me. You make a good point though!

  5. I usually check out the blurp (excerpt) to see if it hits my fancy. I also check out Amazon and Goodreads for others views on how they enjoyed a book.

  6. But, I also love to help out new authors and will help get the word out for them by Tweeting and sharing their books on my FB wall.

  7. I read the blurb, check out the cover first. I usually pick freebies or inexpensive from a genre I'm interested in

  9. I'm not too picky. In fact I tend to give new-to-me authors more of a chance than someone I've read before (Auto-snags like Michael Moorcock notwithstanding). One can weed out the titles that don't sound interesting and leave them to others. So if it sounds interesting, why not give a new-to-you a chance? You never know what to expect until you read a bit. ;) You might find your next favorite of all time author! However, it just depends. I don't think anything will make me read a genre or topic I don't care for, but never say never. Heck, I lived by this even before the advent of the e-reader.
